He gained all of Devon and Cornwall, and in 825 he defeated Beornwulf of Mercia and brought Surrey, Sussex, and Kent permanently under West Saxon rule.

This approximately 400-year period of European history is often referred to as the Early Middle Ages or, more controversially, as the Dark Ages.
