Der Namensgeber des Preises, Will Eisner, war bis zu seinem Tod 2005 regelmäßiger Teilnehmer an der Zeremonie. Der Vorgänger der Eisner-Awards waren die von 1985 bis 1987 vergebenen Kirby Awards.
