Nelson Algren was one of the semi-Beat semi-French Existentialists who rebelled even against them to write first Marxist novels concerning the plight of the downtrodden: SOMEONE IN BOOTS, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM, etc. But as he matured, he changed--from a Marxist to an Absurdist.
