Dáin's brother, Borin, would go on to issue Gimli's line, and Dáin would sire Thorin's. Dáin would have three sons, among them, Thrór, grandfather of Thorin II.

Evidently, it has been meaningful to Tolkien and his entire family: It was his father’s middle name; his parents gave the name to both their sons; and Tolkien, in turn, gave it to all four of his children, including his daughter, Priscilla.
