17. Feb. 2022 · The story of Abraham Lincoln’s life is threaded with tragedy. And one of the most powerful blows that the president suffered came when he lost his young son, Edward Baker Lincoln, in 1850. Edward, also called Eddie or Eddy, died just a month shy of his fourth birthday.
Taking his seat in the U.S. Senate in December 1860, Baker introduced Lincoln at his first inauguration in March 1861. He asked for and received permission to raise and lead a regiment in the war. Baker was killed at the Battle of Ball's Bluff on October 21, 1861, the only member of Congress to die in battle in the Civil War.

In 1844, Baker ran for Congress to Illinois’ 7th Congressional district and defeated Lincoln for the Whig Party nomination. In the general election, Baker was victorious with 52.4 percent of the vote.
