In the late 1930s, he began work developing the basic method of quantitative study of the internal motion of atoms in molecules. His theoretical work led to the foundation of the field of molecular spectroscopy. His research has also laid the foundation for molecular astronomy.
In his research, Bright became a major architect of chemical physics. He provided definitive theoretical treatments of many aspects of molecular vibrational and rotational dynamics, especially symmetry analysis, and developed with his students key experimental methods in infrared and microwave spectroscopy.
