Truman Capote, Writer, New York City. Richard Avedon American. October 10, 1955, printed 1974–75. Not on view. Longtime friends and collaborators Richard Avedon and Truman Capote first worked together in 1959, when Capote wrote the text for Avedon’s book of portrait photographs, Observations.
This early book on Richard Avedon presents the photographer’s striking portraits from the 1940s and ’50s of luminaries as well as a profile of Avedon by Truman Capote and literary sketches of the portrait subjects by the novelist.
Avedon’s first museum retrospective was held at the Smithsonian Institution in 1962. Many major museum shows followed, including two at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1978 and 2002), the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (1970), the Amon Carter Museum of American Art (1985), and the Whitney Museum of American Art (1994).
