13. Mai 2024 · Hippocrates, ancient Greek physician who lived during Greece’s Classical period and is traditionally regarded as the father of medicine. He has been revered for his ethical standards in medical practice, mainly for the Hippocratic Oath, which, it is suspected, he did not write.
One of the most eminent historians of medicine, Philip J. van der Eijk, has recently argued that we should abandon the moniker ‘Hippocratic’ and simply talk about early Greek medicine, as the so-called Hippocratic Corpus is so diverse and contains writings from the fifth century BC to the first and second century AD.
The Hippocratic Writings and Hellenistic Medicine The Hippocratic writings were influential in the development of later biomedical practitioners. The three principal Hellenistic schools: Dogmatists, Methodists, and the Empirics all hearken back in various ways to the Hippocratic writings.
