El Baile Alemán ("The German Dance" in Spanish) is a cover album by Señor Coconut y Su Conjunto which was released on 23 December 1999 on vinyl in the US and released on other formats and regions on 26 January 2000. It consists of Kraftwerk covers done in a Latin American style.
Uwe Schmidt obtained official permission by Kraftwerk themselves to release El Baile Alemán, though had to remove his version of "Radioactivity". European and North American record companies remained uninterested until triggered by the hype El Baile Alemán had caused in Japan.

Looking at El Baile Alemán as a multi-layered site of postnational musical production, I consider how Schmidt’s adoption of multiple personae and musical references call into question issues of genre naming, authenticity, identity, colliding stereotypes and authorship.
