The main title ( Gale's Theme ) features a rich orchestral prologue, very much Goldsmith that focuses on woodwinds and strings, but rallies the full orchestra for an elaborate close. Big Water introduces the dramatic percussive lead music for the river itself and the treacherous rapids.

Music. The film was initially scored by Maurice Jarre, but after the producers threw his work out, Jerry Goldsmith was signed to rescore the project (footage of the Goldsmith scoring sessions was used in the 1995 documentary Film Music Masters: Jerry Goldsmith, with extended footage of same as a DVD bonus).
