    Cook County State's Attorney Joseph E. Birkett (born February 13, 1955) is an appellate court judge on the Illinois Appellate CourtSecond District. He was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court in December 2010, and was subsequently elected to a full term in November 2012.

    Birkett received his B.A. degree (in political science and English) from North Central College in 1977 and his J.D.degree from the John Marshall Law School in 1981.

    Birkett began his legal career in 1981 as an Assistant State's Attorney. He worked in this position until October 1, 1996, when he became the DuPage County State's Attorney. During this time, he served as Chief of the Major Crimes Unit (1985-1986), Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division (1986-1991) and Chief of the Criminal Division (1991-1996).
