Mary Pennington (Updike) Weatherall (January 26, 1930 - February 25, 2018) was a visual artist and the first wife of John Updike. Many of Updike's early characters were modeled after her, particularly in his short stories about the Maple family and his novel Couples.
25. Feb. 2018 · All of us at The John Updike Society were saddened to see the notice that Michael Updike just posted on Facebook that his mother, Mary Pennington (Updike) Weatherall, has died. Mary, John Updike’s first wife and the mother of his four children, was a supporter of the society from the very beginning.

März 2018 · An artist before meeting and marrying the writer John Updike, Mrs. Weatherall largely set aside painting while raising their four children, only to return to her brushes and easel with renewed purpose during her second marriage. She was 88 when she died of pneumonia Feb. 25 in her Ipswich home.
