The first song that Ringo recorded with this drum set was Matchbox, on June 1, 1964. This was Ringo's workhorse from May 31, 1964 thru September 11, 1968 when he began using his Ludwig Hollywood maple kit.
Serial numbers. Serial numbers don’t directly identify specific drum type or year. In fact, it wasn’t until 1964 that Ludwig started to put serial numbers on their products. That leaves 4 years of 60’s era drums that can’t be dated using a serial number guide.
In 1964, a little-known British outfit called The Beatles made their international TV debut on The Ed Sullivan show and changed popular culture forever. The drummer, Ringo Starr, chose to play a Black Oyster Pearl Ludwig drum kit, with the Ludwig brand logo visibly plastered across the 20” bass drum.
Photo: Scott Robert Ritchie. Filming for the movie A Hard Day’s Night was scheduled beginning on March 2, 1964. It was decided that a second Ludwig oyster black pearl Downbeat drum kit (identical to what Ringo was using) would be obtained while the Beatles were in the US on their first visit.
From 1964 until 1975, Rogers shells were 5-ply construction of alternating plies of maple and birch wood with reinforcement rings. From late 1975 until 1978 the shells were made up of 5 alternating plies of maple and birch wood with reinforcement rings.
