William von Meister was an American entrepreneur who founded The Source and Control Video Corporation, predecessors to AOL. He was born in New York City to a noble German family and died of cancer in Virginia in 1995.

The Source was the first purely consumer on-line service in the United States, founded in 1978 by William von Meister, a local telecommunications entrepreneur. It offered various databases, news, games, and electronic mail, but faced financial and technical challenges and was acquired by CompuServe in 1989.
