  1. In 1945, Dunham opened and directed the Katherine Dunham School of Dance and Theatre near Times Square in New York City. Her dance company was provided with rent-free studio space for three years by an admirer and patron, Lee Shubert; it had an initial enrollment of 350 students.

  5. The Dunham School of Dance and Theater opens in New York in Caravan Hall (Isadora Duncan's former studio) on West Fifty-ninth Street. Dunham and her company appear in such clubs as Chez Paree in Chicago, El Rancho Hotel and the Trocadero in Las Vegas, and Ciro's in Hollywood.

Several national tours later, The Dunham School of Dance and Theater opened in New York at Caravan Hall, and her dance group would be based in and perform around the city. The school underwent several name changes over the years, settling on the Katherine Dunham School of Cultural Arts in 1952.
