Earle grew up in South Nashville, Tennessee, with his mother, Carol Ann Hunter Earle. His father, Steve Earle, named him in honor of his own mentor, singer and songwriter Townes Van Zandt. When Justin was two, his father left the family, but after Steve Earle got sober in 1994 he returned.
