Obadiah Hawthorne Carter (December 12, 1925 – June 30, 1994) [1] was an American musician who was a member of the "5" Royales, an R & B group in the 1940s and 1950s. [2] Carter was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the youngest son of John Carter, a gardener, and Octavia, a laundress. [3]
He served in the Mexican War, as a Private in Capt. Welch's Company G, of Lt.Col. Gray's Battalion. He enlisted at Fort Smith Arkansas 16 Jul 1846. In 1853, He and his family went to California on his son Venable's second trip on the California Trail. Son Harvey was killed in an accident and buried beside the trail.
