Jean-Claude Gardin (3 April 1925 – 8 April 2013) was a French archaeologist who is recognized as being one of the founders of archaeological computing.
Jean-Claude Gardin est un Français libre et un archéologue français né à Paris le 3 avril 1925 où il est mort le 8 avril 2013 [1]. Jean-Claude Gardin > French archaeologist specialised in oriental studies and promoter of many important research projects in Central Asia. Drawing on a heterogeneous background of studies, since the 1950s Gardin was deeply involved in the formalisation of scientific languages and the modelling of archaeological constructs.
A scholar of international renown, with an eclectic academic background, in the early Fifties Gardin pioneeringly approached the use of innovative techniques to automate the processes of description and classification of archaeological materials, be they objects, iconographic themes or ancient texts.
