Nikollë Bojaxhiu, Vater von Anjezë Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Teresa wurde am 26. August 1910 als Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in Üsküp (heute Skopje, albanisch Shkup) im Osmanischen Reich als Kind einer wohlhabenden katholischen albanischen Familie geboren. Sie wuchs zusammen mit ihrer Schwester Age und ihrem Bruder Lazër auf.

His company constructed the first theatre of Üsküb and participated in the development of the railway line that connected Kosovo with Skopje—a project he personally financed.
She was the youngest child of Nikollë and Dranafile Bojaxhiu (Bernai). Her father, who was involved in Albanian-community politics in Ottoman North Macedonia, died in 1919 when she was eight years old. He was born in Prizren (today in Kosovo), however, his family was from Mirdita (present-day Albania).
