In 1995, Shankar released Raga Aberi, a critically acclaimed rendition of ragam “Abheri”, featuring his original composition set in a 9 1/2 beat cycle. Within the same year, the album garnered a Grammy Award nomination in the "Best World Music Album" category.
This recording of South Indian classical music features three of India's most exciting performers, each of whom was a member of the group Shakti. Raga Aberi is Shankar's original composition and is played as one continuous piece in a tala of 4 and 3/4 beats (4 kala Pallavi).
