Sarjun was a Levantine Christian and a servant of Mu'awiya. He was his scribe and advisor in governmental affairs, also in charge of recording the tax records (diwan al-kharaj). After the death of Mu'awiya, Sarjun kept functioning in the court of Yazid b. Mu'awiya.
