This was the most important exhibition in France about the artist since the celebration of the centennary of Gauguin's birth organised in the Orangerie des Tuileries in 1949. The aim of this exhibition was to show and to study Gauguin 's work as a whole, including all the techniques.
After starting out as a painter within the Impressionist movement, Paul Gauguin shifted towards Synthetism and Symbolism, making him one of the most influential artists of the late nineteenth century.
The Museum is closed for renovations - but the sister museum in Hiva Oa is open. The museum is located at PK 51, 2 Papeari, Tahiti, directly across from the Botanical Gardens. French Polynesian and Marquesan cultural aspects are represented in its exhibits, which include original Paul Gauguin documents, photographs, reproductions, sculptures, engravings and gouaches.
Built in 1964, by Father Patrick O'Reilly with the participation of the Singer-Polignac Foundation, the Gauguin museum is situated close to Mataiea on the west coast of Tahiti Nui. It was here that famoius artist lived during his first stay in Polynesia in 1891.
Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin [ øʒˌɛn ɑ̃ˌʁi ˌpol ɡoˈɡɛ̃] (* 7. Juni 1848 in Paris; † 8. Mai 1903 in Atuona auf Hiva Oa, Französisch-Polynesien) war ein einflussreicher französischer Maler. Darüber hinaus fertigte er Keramiken, Holzschnitzereien und Holzschnitte an. Er wurde vor allem durch seine Gemälde aus der Südsee bekannt.
