Lawrence Tibbett is one of my top favorite baritones. I adore the sheer expansion and marvellous richness of his dark-timbred voice, his pure legato, the warmth, the extensive range from the bottom to the very top, his coloring and nuancing a phrase, and his lyrical declamation.

His Met roles included Valentin in Charles Gounod 's Faust, Silvio, and later, Tonio, in Ruggero Leoncavallo 's Pagliacci and the King's Herald in Richard Wagner 's Lohengrin. He first achieved national recognition playing Ford in Giuseppe Verdi 's Falstaff. [1] .
Lawrence Tibbett (pictured at the top of the page as Boccanegra) not only had a rich, extraordinarily beautiful baritone voice but was widely acknowledged as a talented and powerful actor. By 1932, Tibbett was also something of an American icon.
