Andrew Kennedy Irvine (born 14 June 1942) is an Irish folk musician, singer-songwriter, and a founding member of Sweeney's Men, Planxty, Patrick Street, Mozaik, LAPD and Usher's Island. He also featured in duos, with Dónal Lunny, Paul Brady, Mick Hanly, Dick Gaughan, Rens van der Zalm, and Luke Plumb.
Andy Irvine, whose blistering rendition of "The Blacksmith" and deeply affecting lament "As I Roved Out" serve as definite highlights, is the perfect foil to Christy Moore's soft, everyman voice. Moore 's "Cliffs of Dooneen" and "The Lakes of Pontchartrain" are gorgeous ballads that revel in their deceptive simplicity.
Planxty were an Irish folk music band formed in January 1972,: 99–100 consisting initially of Christy Moore (vocals, acoustic guitar, bodhrán), Andy Irvine (vocals, mandolin, mandola, bouzouki, hurdy-gurdy, harmonica), Dónal Lunny (bouzouki, guitars, bodhrán, keyboards), and Liam O'Flynn (uilleann pipes, tin whistle).
Planxty broke up - for the first time - in late 1975 and Andy performed and recorded with Paul Brady, making the classic album "Andy Irvine & Paul Brady" in 1976. He also worked and recorded brieefly with De Dannan before re-uniting with Planxty in 1979 until it's second break up in 1983.
The last track revealed the impact of Balkan folk music on mandolinist Andy Irvine. The traditional song " The Blacksmith " concludes with Irvine playing "Blacksmithereens", a tune reflecting the influences he gathered during his travels in Eastern Europe .
