The name of the band comes from Perry's nickname of Upsetter, after his song "I Am the Upsetter", a musical dismissal of his former boss Coxsone Dodd .
The Upsetters hatte sich schon eine in der ersten Hälfte der 1960er Jahre vom Saxophonisten Roland Alphonso gegründete Ska-Gruppe geheissen. Diese war zuerst für den Produzenten Clement "Coxsone" Dodd vom Studio One tätig und stand danach unter der Aufsicht des Produzenten Leslie Kong. Diese Upsetters konnten zwischen 1962 und 1967 mehr als ein Dutzend Singles veröffentlichen.
