Die Charlatans wurden 1988 von Martin Blunt, ehemaliges Mitglied der Mod -Band Makin’ Time, zusammen mit Baz Ketley und Jon Brookes im Großraum Birmingham gegründet. Blunt schlug als Namen Law Lords vor, Ketley bevorzugte den Namen The Charlatans. Der Entscheid wurde durch Münzwurf ermittelt.
The band were formed in the West Midlands by bassist Martin Blunt, who recruited fellow West Midlanders Rob Collins , Jon Brookes , Jon Day (Jonathan Baker) and singer-guitarist Baz Ketley. Ketley left the band and was replaced by singer Tim Burgess , who had supported the Charlatans with his previous band, the Electric Crayons.
However, The Charlatans would soon drop Baz Ketley for Tim Burgess, a vocalist who has proven to be among the band’s irreplaceable pillars of success. The band went ahead to make official releases in 1990 with its founder Martin Blunt citing The Doors , The Stranglers , and Joy Division as the band’s primary influences.

Former members of the band include vocalist Baz Ketley (1989); guitarist Jon Day (Jonathan Baker) (1989–1991); keyboardist Rob Collins (1989–1996), who died in acar accident during recording of their fifth album; and drummer Jon Brookes (1989-2013), who died after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2010.
