The "5" Royales was an American rhythm and blues (R&B) vocal group from Winston-Salem, North Carolina that combined gospel, jump blues and doo-wop, marking an early and influential step in the evolution of rock and roll.
Monkey Hips and Rice: The "5" Royales Anthology is a compilation album by the American R&B group the "5" Royales, released in 1994. It collects songs from the group's King and Apollo years. The only two-disc title in Rhino Records' King Master Series, it was released the same year that group members Eugene Tanner and Obadiah Carter died.

Signed by Apollo Records (2), the group's name was changed from the Royal Sons Quintet to the "5" Royales by the label's Carl Le Bowe. Because they were a six-man outfit for a while; the quotes around the 5 in their billing was a recognition of this and was designed to help to alleviate confusion.
