Michael Brecker performs “Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise” at the 2003 Jazz Baltica festival at Schloss Salzau, Germany. The tune was written by Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein for the 1928 operetta The New Moon .
The ultimate success of New Moon led to an MGM film version in 1931 starring Grace Moore and Lawrence Tibbett, although the setting was changed from late-18th century New Orleans to Russia. MGM redid the film in 1940, changing the locale back to the original. The 1940 version featured the singing team of Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald.

Michael Leonard Brecker (March 29, 1949 – January 13, 2007), nicknamed Dr. Sax, was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. He was awarded 15 Grammy Awards as a performer and composer, received an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music in 2004, [3] and was inducted into the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame in 2007.
