Oakland Military Institute, formally the Oakland Military Institute College Preparatory Academy, is a charter school run by the California Military Department's Youth and Community Programs Task Force in partnership with the Oakland Unified School District in Oakland, California.
Oakland Military Academy was founded in Oakland, New Jersey in the 1930s by the Sarcka family. During the 1950s, the military curriculum was discontinued, and the academy was moved to New Windsor, New York.
MISSION: The mission of the Oakland Military Institute College Preparatory Academy (OMI) is to prepare each of its cadets to qualify for, and succeed in, leading colleges and universities. OMI, through a traditional military school framework, instills honor, integrity and leadership.

OMI was founded in 2001 after a hard-fought two-year campaign led by then Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown. Governor Gray Davis helped secure the charter after local school boards rejected it.
