Die al-Assads stammen aus Qardaha im Nordwesten Syriens und gehören dem alawitischen Kalabiyya-Stamm an. Der Name „Assad“ geht auf Ali Sulayman (1875–1963) zurück, der 1927 seinen Nachnamen änderte, was vermutlich im Zusammenhang mit seinem sozialen Prestige als lokaler „Richter“ und seinen politischen Aktivitäten steht.
Ali al-Assad (né al-Wahsh; 1875 – 1963) was a Syrian farmer and tribal leader who was the father of former Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and grandfather of current president Bashar al-Assad.
The Assad family originates from Ali Sulayman al-Wahsh, Hafiz al-Assad's father, who was born in 1875 and lived in the village of Qardaha in the coastal Syrian mountains. The locals reportedly nicknamed him "Wahsh", Arabic for "wild beast", because he was physically strong and a good fighter.
Alawite leaders, such as Sulayman Ali al-Assad, the grandfather of Hafez al-Assad, rejected any type of attachment to an independent Syria and wished to stay autonomous under French protection. Yet the Alawite community remained divided over the future of the community.
Assad's paternal grandfather, Ali Sulayman al-Assad, had managed to change his status from peasant to minor notable and, to reflect this, in 1927 he had changed the family name from Wahsh (meaning "Savage") to Al-Assad.
