The Summoner's Tale" is one of The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. The tale is a fierce counterpunch to the preceding tale by The Friar, who had delivered an attack on summoners.

The Summoner's Tale is a fabliaux, but the surviving fabliaux offer almost no analogues. The only one that comes anywhere near Chaucer's tale in either action or in respect to characterization is a French fabliaux by Jacques de Baisieux: The Tale of the Priest's Bladder.
The Summoner's Tale. A friar went to preach and beg in a marshy region of Yorkshire called Holderness. In his sermons he begged for donations for the church and afterward he begged for charity from the local residents. The Friar interrupts, calling the Summoner a liar, but is silenced by the Host.
The Summoner does not object, but he promises to pay the Friar back in his own tale. The Friar tells of an archdeacon who carries out the law without mercy, especially to lechers. The archdeacon has a summoner who has a network of spies working for him, to let him know who has been lecherous.
