Dickson had one of the few normal colleges in the state, but it was a private school. Dickson had lobbied to be considered for one of the new public colleges, but was not chosen. This news spelled doom for the Dickson Normal College. Without public funding, it would be difficult to compete with the new publicly funded schools.

The Dickson Normal College opened its first session in the fall of 1891. Many of the students were “boarding school students” who had arrived on the railroad from places outside of Dickson, while some were from Dickson County. The school was an immediate success.
31. März 2022 · For a few years, the campus served as a prep school, but none of the schools that followed the Dickson Normal College ever truly succeeded. Many people in Dickson thought the former college campus would be the perfect site for a first-class public high school.
