Der Kojote erreicht eine Kopf-Rumpf-Länge von 70 bis 97 cm, eine Schwanzlänge von 30 bis 38 cm, eine Schulterhöhe von 45 bis 53 cm und ein Gewicht von 10 bis 18 kg, wobei der Durchschnitt aber eher bei 12,5 kg liegt. Allerdings können besonders kräftige und große Tiere sogar ein Gewicht von bis zu 30 kg erreichen.
