Doug Sahm, a veteran of the professional music scene who first sang on radio at the age of five, formed the Quintet (first called simply "Sir Douglas") in 1964 with longtime friend Augie Meyers and the other original members, Jack Barber, Frank Morin, and Johnny Perez.

Das Sir Douglas Quintet entstand 1964 um den Texaner Doug Sahm, der seit seiner Kindheit musikalisch aktiv war und bereits mehrere Bands gegründet hatte, und dessen Schulfreund Augie Meyers.
Sahm left California in 1971 and returned to San Antonio. He released an album entitled The Return of Doug Saldaña with the Sir Douglas Quintet; Chicano musicians in San Antonio had given him the nickname "Saldaña". A cover of "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" on the album helped to reignite the career of its original singer, Freddy Fender.
