The band were formed in Stafford, Staffordshire, England, in 1967 by vocalist and harmonica player Colin Cooper (1939–2008), guitarist and vocalist Pete Haycock (1951–2013), guitarist Derek Holt (b. 1949), bassist and keyboardist Richard Jones (b. 1949), drummer George Newsome (b. 1947), and keyboardist Arthur Wood (1929–2005).
One of the leading lights of the late 1960s UK blues boom, the original members were guitarists Derek Holt and Peter Haycock (1951-2013), keyboardist Arthur Wood (1929-2005), bassist Richard Jones, and drummer George Newsome; Colin Cooper (1939–2008) on vocals and saxophone made up the sextet.

Gavin Christopher Newsom (born October 10, 1967) is an American politician and businessman serving since 2019 as the 40th governor of California. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the 49th lieutenant governor of California from 2011 to 2019 and the 42nd mayor of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011.

Gregory Newsome II (born May 18, 2000) is an American football cornerback for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Northwestern and was drafted by the Browns in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Stanley “George” Newsome Jr went home to be with the Lord on February 17, 2023. George was born in Groves, TX on January 27, 1939, to Stanley and Sybil Newsome. He graduated from Port Neches-Groves High School in 1957 and went on to serve as Petty Officer 3rd Class for the Seabees in the US Navy aboard the USS Tanner.
