Sentencedin edeltäjä Utmost Deformity sai alkunsa vuonna 1988. Alkuperäiseen kokoonpanoon kuuluivat Miika Tenkula (kitara ja laulu), Lari Kylmänen ja Tuure Heikkilä . Seuraavana vuonna kitaristi Sami Lopakka liittyi yhtyeeseen ja Vesa Ranta korvasi Tuure Heikkilän.
