Order of St. Anne. Mikhail Vasilyevich Alekseyev ( Russian: Михаил Васильевич Алексеев) (15 November [ O.S. 3 November] 1857 – 8 October [ O.S. 25 September] 1918) was an Imperial Russian Army general during World War I and the Russian Civil War.
The first formations of the Volunteer Army were created in Novocherkassk, the capital of the Don Cossack Oblast', and were based on the Alekseev officers' organization. The first volunteers who arrived with General Mikhail Vasilievich Alekseev (1857-1918) at the beginning of November 1917 settled in Infirmary Nº 2 (39 Barochnaia Street).
In 1890 he graduated from the academy of general staff, first in his class. He received an appointment at the general staff and remained in St. Petersburg. Along with his staff service, he also taught Russian military history at the academy in 1890-1904.
The son of a private soldier, Alekseyev entered the Russian Army in 1876 and was graduated in 1890 from the staff college. He became a general in 1904. Early in World War I, he planned the successful Russian offensive into Galicia .

Alexeyev completed the Moscow Junker School (1876) and the Nicholas Academy of the General Staff (1890). He taught at the latter between 1898 and the Russo-Japanese War, in which he served at Sandepu and Mukden as chief of staff for the Third Manchurian Army.
The driver for this development was the weakening of Russia’s military power and the political crisis at home brought on by the Great Retreat in summer 1915.
