Formerly known as the University College of North Wales (UCNW; Welsh: Coleg Prifysgol Gogledd Cymru), and later the University of Wales, Bangor (UWB; Welsh: Prifysgol Cymru, Bangor), it adopted its current name in 2007, as it became independent from the University of Wales.

Funded by quarrymen and farmers who wanted to give the local people of North Wales the chance to access higher education, Bangor University first opened its doors on 18 October 1884. Known as the University College of North Wales, the institution, which was based in an old coaching inn, had 58 students and had ten members of staff.

März 2020 · There was a college founded in Aberystwyth back in 1872, and then, about a decade later, a government report said there should be one university college in North Wales and one in South Wales. In short, by 1883 it was agreed that the university college in North Wales would be in Bangor; a number of different towns competed for the honour.
