The group has existed in various forms since its founding in Long Beach, California. [2] Between 1976 and 1981, the band performed and recorded as the Dirt Band . Constant members since the early times are singer-guitarist Jeff Hanna and drummer Jimmie Fadden.
Jimmie Fadden is a founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and a harmonica player influenced by Sonny Terry, Charlie McCoy, and Bob Dylan. He shares his musical journey, experiences, and tips in this interview with Ross Garren, a harmonica teacher and player.

Jimmie Fadden. There are few who have had as large an influence on modern harp players as Jimmie Fadden, with his over four decades of recording and touring, and his unique country blues style. Jimmy was a founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, formed in 1966, when the members all agreed "It was a way to avoid legitimate work".
The current lineup of the band features Jeff Hanna, Jimmie Fadden on drums, harmonica and vocals (since 1966), Bob Carpenter on keyboards and vocals (since 1979), Jim Photoglo on bass and guitar (since 2005), Jaime Hanna on guitar and vocals, and Ross Holmes on mandolin and fiddle (both since 2018).
