(b London, 28 Mar. 1809; d London, 19 Mar. 1896). The best-known member of a family of English painters. A pupil of his father, the miniaturist Thomas Richmond, Sen. (1771–1837), he also studied at the Royal Academy, where he became a friend of Samuel Palmer.
Portrait of two children. Richmond was one of Victorian Britain’s most successful watercolor portraitists, creating intimate and engaging images. His reputation was launched in 1832 when he represented the abolitionist-politician William Wilberforce.
This archive is by far the largest surviving body of manuscripts resulting from the life of George Richmond, RA. His professional career spans the Victorian era, beginning before the coming of the railways and ending at the dawn of the automobile.
