Gift 11.4.1953 med Anne-Karin Jarlsby (24.10.1931–2020), datter av direktør Olav Trygve Jarlsby (1900–1960) og Ragnhild Charlotte Lund (1899–1977).
Gunnar Fridtjof Thurmann Sønsteby (1918–2012) var en norsk motstandsmann under andre verdenskrig, best kjent som «Kjakan», men også som «Erling Fjeld» og «Nr. 24». Han var leder av Oslogjengen, der han opererte sammen med blant andre Max Manus. Sønsteby ledet og deltok i en rekke sabotasjeaksjoner i krigens løp.
