James Randel "Randy" Matson (born March 5, 1945) is an American track and field athlete who mostly competed in the shot put. Matson won a silver medal at the 1964 and a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics.
Randy Matson (born March 5, 1945, Kilgore, Texas, U.S.) is an American shot-putter who, in 1965, became the first man to put the shot more than 21 m, with a distance of 21.52 m (70.6 ft). Matson’s weight-throwing ability was recognized when he was in the eighth grade by the high school coach of Pampa, Texas, who went on to train him.

Randy Matson. Biographical information. Biography. After failing by a narrow margin to defeat Dallas Long at the 1964 Olympics, Randy Matson enjoyed a comfortable win at the 1968 Games. In 1964, as a freshman at Texas A&M, he also won the first of his six AAU shot titles and at the NCAA championships he scored a shot/discus double in 1966-67.
