The English silk-weaver William Baffin (c. 1584 – 23 January 1622) became a navigator, explorer and cartographer. He is primarily known for his attempt to find a Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific, during the course of which he was the first European to discover Baffin Bay situated between Canada and Greenland.
William Baffin (born c. 1584, London, England?—died January 23, 1622, Persian Gulf, off the island of Qeshm [now part of Iran]) was a navigator who searched for the Northwest Passage and gave his name to Baffin Island, now part of Nunavut, Canada, and to the bay separating it from Greenland.
