Twenty-year-old Jane Goodall made scientific history when, in 1960, she entered the world of wild chimpanzees. In the longest study of any wild animal group in the world, Goodall's work broke many myths and misconceptions about this primate species.

In July 1960, Jane Goodall arrives in Africa to study chimpanzees in their own environment. Her childhood dream of studying these animals has come true.

Learn about Jane Goodall's first days in the Gombe reserve. Chimps flee at the mere sight of her. Her behavior is well-planned--she sits in the same place every day and eventually becomes less of a threat to the chimps. She discovers an abandoned chimp sleeping platform.

While Goodall waited patiently for closer contact with the chimps, she learned a new language and the customs of the people who allowed her to live among them. She develops a make-shift clinic. Baron Hugo van Lawick joins Goodall as her cameraman. He captures the social behavior of chimps.

Young chimps play. After 18 months, a small group of chimps allows Goodall to move closer to them without alarm. Goodall names the chimps and observes how a family of chimps interacts.

Another group's arrival is signaled by a chorus of hooting calls. A male puts on an "awesome" charging display for dominance. One male rises to the dominant position by making a great deal of noise with an empty metal container.

At dusk, chimps build sleeping nests 30-40 feet above ground. Goodall often sleeps on the ground near the chimps so she will be there to observe the animals at first light.

A chimp enters Goodall's camp and steals a large bunch of bananas. Following this chimp's lead, the chimps come to Jane's camp. AS the chimps become more accustomed to eating in Jane's camp, aggressive baboons join them and become pests.

Goodall records the development of a baby chimp named Flint. Watch him as he takes his first steps and is comforted by his mother Flo. Flint's sister Fifi watches Flow's mothering behavior. Fifi practices what she sees when she is allowed to take Flint for short periods of time. Dominant male Goliath puts on a dramatic display.

Chimps and baboons love termites. Chimps have learned how to use sticks or grass as tools to pull termites out of their underground nests. The chimps make and use tools.
