The Thirteenth Chair is a 1929 American mystery film directed by Tod Browning. The picture is based on a 1916 play of the same name by Bayard Veiller. It stars Conrad Nagel, Leila Hyams and Margaret Wycherly. The film was one of many released in both sound and silent versions.

The murders are pinned on a young runaway named Helen O'Neill (Leila Hyams) who is taken in by a well-intentioned fake Irish medium, Madame LaGrange (Margaret Wycherly). Delzante toys with the various characters in attendance and makes them reveal the real killer, and Lugosi is a lot of fun to watch.
The mysterious killing of writer Spencer Lee in Calcutta prompts authorities to consult Madame Rosalie La Grange, a reputedly successful medium. At a seance, Wales, Lee's best friend, is killed at the very moment he is about to reveal the murderer's identity; but through a reconstruction of the seance, the killer is frightened into a confession.
