A mysterious barber hides a secret identity that eventually leads to tragedy. An intriguing addition to the cycle of late-1940s British film noir, Daybreak lacks the reputation of Brighton Rock (d. John Boulting, 1948), but is equally menacing and utterly compelling.
Having just inherited 15 barges from his wealthy father, Eddie (Eric Portman) is determined to abandon his life-snuffing vocation, especially after falling in love with Frankie (Ann Todd), a young woman with a questionable past who not only agrees to marry Eddie but insists they live on his coziest barge on the Thames.
Daybreak (1948) is a fairly heavy British drama that ends tragic. Solid acting from those involved, with Eric Portman being a commanding figure and Ann Todd the touch of sweetness. Don't go expecting continuous suspense, it's not that type of movie. But it's a solid darker toned story.
