  6. Addington studied for the Bar, to which he was called on 11 May 1784. In the same year he became MP for Devizes in Wiltshire. He represented the constituency until his elevation to the House of Lords as Viscount Sidmouth on 12 January 1805. Addington and Pitt the Younger were friends from childhood.
