Chichester Samuel Parkinson-Fortescue, Baron Carlingford and 2nd Baron Clermont. (1823-1898), Politician; MP for County Louth; ex-officio Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery. Sitter in 18 portraits. Fortescue became MP for the Irish seat of County Louth in 1847; he retained the seat until defeated in 1874.
Sensing defeat, he canvassed Gladstone before the election for a peerage and in February was made Baron Carlingford. The death of his wife in 1879 was a devastating blow and he vowed to retire from public life.
