25. Apr. 2024 · Abdou Diouf is a politician who was president of Senegal from 1981 to 2000. Diouf, the son of a postman, was a member of the Serer people and a devout Muslim. He attended the well-known Lycée Faidherbe in Saint-Louis, then capital of Senegal, and the University of Dakar. In 1958 he went to Paris.
Abdou Diouf contributed to making Senegal’s voice heard across the world and strived to bring about greater African unity, particularly by taking on functions as the Chairman of the Organization for African Unity (1985-1986 and 1992) and Chairman of ECOWAS (1991–1992).
Abdou Diouf accède à la Présidence de la République du Sénégal le 1er janvier 1981, à la suite de la démission du Président Senghor et est reconduit dans ses fonctions lors des élections de 1983, 1988 et 1993.
