He is known for leading the Black Bands and serving valiantly in military combat under his third cousins, Pope Leo X and Pope Clement VII, in the War of Urbino and the War of the League of Cognac, respectively.

Giovanni dalle Bande Nere, noto condottiero italiano del XVI secolo, morì in battaglia durante un assedio a Mantova nel 1526. Secondo gli studi condotti dal professor Fornaciari, la causa della morte di Giovanni fu la setticemia, una grave infezione del sangue.

In 1526 he entered the army of the League of Cognac against the emperor but was mortally wounded in battle near Mantua on November 25 and died five days later. His bande nere, or “black bands,” were named from the black banners that they began to carry in mourning for Leo X.
